Make A Commitment To Change Your Life

Watch Michael Moore’s film “Capitalism: A Love Story” online for free.

Key Concepts –

  • Accept personal responsibility for your family’s needs;
  • Poverty is not just about being broke financially; it is being broke spiritually;
  • Having a JOB (Just Over Broke) is no longer adequate to get out of poverty;
  • If you are receiving any form of government subsidies, your family’s life will be drastically changed;
  • Social Service programs should include education, empowerment and skilled job/entrepreneurial training.

After you finish watching “Capitalism: A Love Story” and reading Strategy #1 Make A Commitment To Change Your Life,

Answer the following questions and post your answers to the discussion board below.

1. Describe the relationship between economics, politics and religion.

2. Define the following terms: Plutocracy, Capitalism, and Democracy. Of the three which of the following describe America. Why?

Now, I would like you to conduct your own research to uncover other instances where profits are made from poverty. Take a close look around your own neighborhood to determine who owns the businesses and if these businesses benefit the residents in a positive way or not. After doing this, I would like you to reflect on Capitalism A Love Story, (the documentary you watched in last week's module), read Strategies 1 and 2 in the text, A Farewell to Welfare, then decide: ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A COMMITMENT TO IMPROVE YOUR FAMILY'S LIFE? If so, post your Declaration of Commitment (Page #56 of A Farewell to Welfare) and give a brief description of why you are declaring to improve your family's life. Also, post the article/video you researched to https://www.facebook.com/groups/afarewelltowelfare... tag me in the post @ProfessorEleaseAWiggins and use the hashtag #AFarewellTowelfareOnlineCourse

Word of Caution: Do not allow the information you find to make you upset. Instead, allow it to fuel your desire to make a commitment to improving your family's life. That's what I did.

Reflection:

Read the statement & questions below, then answer the question and post it to Facebook group. www.facebook.com/groups/afarewelltowelfare

“I made the conscious decision to view welfare as a temporary step in my family’s journey toward freedom and financial stability. My rationale was the government was making an investment in me, and once I started working and paying taxes, the government would receive a return on their investment." Pg. 27

  1. Do U.S. Anti-poverty programs discourage Americans from working?
  2. What will the U.S. look like if policymakers continue taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich?
  3. Create an ideal social welfare policy that will not only benefit the poor it will encourage employment, while benefiting tax payers.(Include a budget of 24 billion dollars).
